Hollywood hasn't bothered to make a decent video game film, whether its the Super Mario movie or the amount of crap Uwe Boll has put out.
The fact you're saying Resident Evil is the closest just proves that, those films are utter garbage and are hardly considered top box office movies that get the budget a film like Iron Man, Spiderman or Batman have.
And tbh, I don't understand how it is that much harder to adapt a video game into a film in comparison to other mediums, if anything its easier to adapt a game into a film since it has already been made visually. Everything is already there, all the spokes on the wheel in place and yet they completely ignore what the story of the game is about and take the action route instead. Lets face it, are video games that much different to films, they already have someone to script the game, someone to direct it visually, someone to write music for the game, costume designs already visually created. You have even said most of them play out with cutscenes that play out like a film. I just don't believe how its that much harder to adapt from a video game in comparison to books. Video games virtually play out like a film, even without cutscenes.
And there hasn't been a book adapted to a film which should have lasted longer then 90 minutes, just look at Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. If you want to satisfy the fans all you need to do is keep it spiritually true to the original content, most comic book films aren't that great, they mostly all play out in the same fashion, but they hit the right notes the fans want and therefore satisfy them enough to enjoy the film; something video game films lack.
Think I'll have a wank over these tomorrow.
Solid Snake is a fictional character. Fictional characters mold to the actors who play them. Do you think that Wolverine is EXACTLY like how Hugh Jackman portrayed him? He was so good as Wolverine because he put his own little twists on him. He's a nuanced actor who can pull off a lot of roles, and I (and clearly most people who aren't you) think he can do Solid Snake. I don't really understand what doesn't make him a good Solid Snake still. And this is exactly why these movies never work, it's because of lofty fan expectations, which is exactly what I explained above.

Ya, and they also made Superman 4: The Quest for Peace, Catwoman and Batman & Robin. Every genre has bad movies. And Uwe Boll doesn't count as Hollywood, he's reviled and basically just does whatever he wants no matter of whatever anyone else thinks.
QuoteThe fact you're saying Resident Evil is the closest just proves that, those films are utter garbage and are hardly considered top box office movies that get the budget a film like Iron Man, Spiderman or Batman have. You may be right about Hollywood not making an effort to make a proper video game movie, but it's just like I said, they probably don't see the point seeing as everyone just complains about everything they do anyway. It's why it took so long to make big time comic book movies. You talk about Iron Man, he only got a big budget movie in 2008 despite being around for decades. Superman and Batman have been around for a while, but it took until only recently for Batman to be taken seriously on the big screen, and the jury's still out on Superman seeing as it's been like 30 years since he's been relevant on the big screen. These things need time and patience, and neither Hollywood nor fans have any of it.

You have even said most of them play out with cutscenes that play out like a film. I just don't believe how its that much harder to adapt from a video game in comparison to books. Video games virtually play out like a film, even without cutscenes. Because if you just adapt the same fucking scripts they use for the game then people will complain that it's lazy, and I'd agree. If I played the game, why would I want to watch the movie if it's the exact same thing? Of course people who make the movies are going to want to put their own twists on them, they do the same thing with everything they adapt. No writer or director is going to want to make a film that already exists in that exact form. So it's not as easy as just taking the video game script and just filming some scenes, as a film fan I'm appalled that you'd even think that. Like I explained, the issue is that even if they're cinematic, they still play out over a much longer period of time, and unlike books or comics they play out in motion, on a screen, and video game fans are notoriously fickle, so it's going to be incessant complaining no matter what they do.

And quite frankly, TRUE comic and book fans are much harder on film adaptations than you'd probably think, fanboys on the web are merciless with that stuff no matter the adaptation in most cases. And it's funny how in one sentence you're saying that they should just take the same scripts form the video game, and in the next you're saying all they need to do is keep "spiritually true" to the original content. This is exactly why we can't have nice things.

I like the way they always imply it is going to be a fully star studded cast. What next? Sean Penn and Brad Pitt as guards 1 and 2?
