I Think it's just what people generally say.  People always say "well back in my day this was better" or nothing ever seems as good as it was the year before.

But as for this year it does seem a little lacking. but Borderlands 2 is coming out next month and that is really all i need.
Fuck that noise, go back and play any Sega game and than go play Red Dead Redemption and tell me which one is better.

Having no interesting and claiming the year is lacking are two WAYYYYYY different things. I "have no interest" in a lot of those games either, meaning I probably won't play them ever or at the very least not for a long time, but I recognize that they're major games that a lot of people care about. Diablo 3 is the highest selling PC game of all time, Mass Effect 3 had people talking for months, Journey had people (myself included) raving about what an indie company could do. The 3DS and Vita have sold millions. From the upcoming games ACIII has people that I know that never liked Assassin's Creed excited and it's a spectacularly ambitious game. Hitman looks to be the best of the series.

Again, no one's forcing anyone to like a game but I just don't see the argument in it not being a big year for gaming just because you might not be interested in the particular games. It would be like claiming it wasn't a big summer for movies if you weren't interested in The Avengers or Batman.

Last year was probably a tad bigger but this year seems pretty big to me as well and next year's going to be even bigger especially in March when all the delayed games are coming out. The fall seems stacked as fuck. I think this year the spring was a little lighter and the fall is a little deeper in terms of number of games coming out.

Think I'll have a wank over these tomorrow.

I'm not sure what you would say the right answer is but i would say Red Dead. but that was kind of my point. No matter how much better games get a lot of people will think the previous one is better. people do that with all sorts of stuff.

Also I agree Prax. and i think if all those games that got delayed came out this year this year would be one of the biggest years ever in gaming but i don't mind at all that they got delayed because there's already so much i want to play that i don't mind my games being spread out throughout the year or pushed back into the next.

I hope you can play tennis in the game. always thought tennis games were fun but just too repetitive but if i can play for 5 mins go kill someone and come back and play for 5 mins that'd be perfect.

Only in GTA would that be acceptable.  :D

I don't know what to say other than that I utterly disagree. You mentioned Splinter Cell, well, there are a million franchises that go the other direction in terms of quality. Uncharted? Infamous? Battlefield? Assassin's Creed? Bioshock? Mass Effect? Elder Scrolls? Just to name a very small amount of franchises that have been great or amazing this generation. I don't see how length is really a valid argument, you have RPGs that are like 50 hours or longer, and shorter experiences as well. It's always been like that. I've never heard anyone complaining about how a lot of the Mario or Sonic games are short experiences. I agree that some companies take DLC a little too far but I don't think that's hurt the generation as much as people have said. I think people just like to complain about how games are expensive but they've always been expensive relative to what's considered expensive in their time. NES games cost just as much as console games cost now. Chrono Trigger cost like 100 bucks when it came out.

I really don't understand the complaint. Maybe you just got better at games? I was shit at games when I was a kid lol
I don't see why its such an absurd statement, I think last generation was an important leap for future video games, a lot more innovation took place and you got more money for what you paid, plus you were more then guaranteed a decent length in single player games, which I personally prefer over multiplayer.

Out of the games you listed, only Uncharted, Mass Effect have truly stood out, on the fence with inFamous but I'll make my mind up on that when I get around to playing the second one. Add a few other games to those three series, and everything else has been decent, but mostly games I could live without. Elder Scrolls has got repetitive since Morrowind/Oblivion, I thought Skyrim would be the great overhaul that series needed, but it just seemed like a new lick of paint over the old problems, hard to ignore the Fallout games as well which play EXACTLY the same as Elder Scrolls games. The DLC for Battlefield 3 costs more then the original game, good game but it has plenty of faults. Bad Company 2 was better. I'll admit I've only played Assassin's Creed 1, which I thought was alright, heard the others are better though, might play them some day and I like the look of the new one. I enjoyed Bioshock, it was refined and a solid experience, but you could complete that game within a week and move on. I just feel like this generation has had plenty of games that could have delivered, but few of them have really hit the highs of the previous generation.

Every generation has its hits and misses. We just reflect more positively on past generations because we don't remember most of the bad experiences, only the good ones. You'll be saying the same thing about this gen in 3 years, I can almost guarantee it.

New GTA V announcements next month, expect a release date, maybe some new video teasers; doubt we'll get any gameplay, but I don't mind that. If its a release date, I expect either the middle of 2013 or end of 2013.

And Prax, you can have your eagerly awaited response to this O0:

I feel like games last generation had more creativity to them, now maybe that is influenced by xbox live, getting older and wiser and achievements and so on and so forth this generation, but I just find myself bored by the time I've completed a game and I rarely play games at all unless there is someone on xbox live that I can talk to. In fact, I've only gone back to a few games this generation in terms of single player or just general ****ing around a few times. Its not like games are bad now, I just find they don't have that amazing factor to them and only a few games have generally wowed me this generation (mass effect trilogy, rdr, gta iv, tld, bogt, uncharted series, and dark souls).

Last generation I literally couldn't get off the likes of counter strike, gta sa, gta 3, timesplitters, halo and halo 2, they just had that replay value that you just don't find anymore. It might be how I personally play games, but I just felt they had a thoroughness lacking this generation. Also it seems like there were more games that I hadn't played that I wish I could have, but never got round to.

Really looking forward to this, i hope they focus more on the fun than the seriousness in this one and with the location i think it will be easier for them to do.

Any word if Vegas will be in this one?

I would be confident Rockstar has heard the communities complaints with GTA IV; practically everyone was disappointed with the level of replayability in IV. However, I feel IV made the necessary steps for the jump from old to current generation video games and truly set the benchmark for the level of detail for games this generation. I would be happy for the majority of IV to be a skeleton to be built upon with V. The health system needs changing, same with the way we purchase weapons/ammo (especially online), and some of the gameplay (like controlling the main character) needs to feel less heavy; but these were all acceptable at the time of IV but are noticeably dated going back to it now.
