Thoughts on Fedor
« on: 2 August 2009, 10:01:18 PM »
Well, after the reports last week that Dana White had managed to sign Fedor to the UFC, to the news that was incorrect, to the "leaked" details on what the UFC's offer entailed (which I honestly believe was done by Dana as a way to show fans how much of a bunch of pricks Fedor/M-1 are being regarding this situation.

The question is, why exactly is Fedor considered the number 1 in the world? Who was the last guy he's beaten who was considered a top 5 heavyweight at the time of the fight? To my knowledge, that would be CroCop in 2005. Infact, the last top fighters he beat were Antonio "Minotauro" Noguiera and Mirko CroCop, 2 men who at the time (2004 and 2005 respectively) were undoubtedly top contenders. Since then, he's defeated nothing more than freak-shows, over-the-hill fighters and guys who are fighting above their weight-class. His last 2 fights, Andrei Arlovski and Tim Sylvia are both on downward spirals after both losing the fights post-Fedor.

Even looking at the last 2 big fighters he beat, they were decision victories, which while still a victory, aren't exactly proof that the guy is a great fighter. Since then, both men have been stopped (CroCop getting KO'd by Gonzaga and Mir destroying Nog and not breaking a sweat). Does CroCop realise that if he gets in the Octagon and gets destroyed that his worth is decreased heavily?

Saying that, what is Fedor worth? He isn't someone who can sell PPV's. Brock Lesnar's debut sold more PPV's than both of Afflictions shows headlined by Fedor. Not only is he not marketable (due to the fact he speaks no english) but the fact is, outside of the hardcore MMA fans, how many people do you think actually know who Fedor is outside of knowing his name?

Until Fedor signs for the UFC and fights the top talent in MMA, I don't see how anyone can put him top of any MMA rankings, even his title was made up, WAMMA? Give me a break. The most important titles in MMA are the UFC titles followed by Strikeforce, the WAMMA title was just created to give Fedor a belt to wear and make him look more important than I'd say he really is.

Any thoughts from anyone else on Fedor? Do you think he deserves the number 1 ranking every MMA news site seems to give him or do you think he is over-rated?
