Oh right I'm surprised by that to a degree, although I guess part of the problem is down to the Americans viewing it as shitting on their historical figure.
I watched Prometheus a couple hours ago and felt it was pretty good. I'm surprised at the amount of criticism I am seeing on the internet and how much people seem to dislike it, literally went on imdb forums to just write some views and everyone is completely disregarding it. I'll admit it isn't as good as Alien, but I avoided going in with the mentality of comparing the two. I felt that was Ridley Scotts intention given the title and the themes behind the film, even if there is an obvious link. I just think that Alien was about 30 odd years ago now and it had its ideas at that time, this isn't from the late 70s early 80s much like the comparison of star wars and indiana jones with their new and old films - comparing the two periods whilst understandable will just leave with disappointment.I felt the film had a purpose, its a speculative film based on the popular debate on why we are here, how that happened etc. The psychological horror on offer was mostly effective, perhaps disappointing for those that preferred the tension Alien offered but I think it can be equally effective. I didn't feel for the characters as much as I'd like, but I think that was down to the script more then the actors although I generally didn't like the cocky guy and his nerdy mate, something about the two that didn't really work and their characters were flawed anyway. Having said that though, Fassbender and Idris Elba pulled out good performances and I liked Noomi Rapace/Shaw come the end. Overall I would say its a good film, it will deliver the goods if you go in with an open mind. I would definitely say its worth about 7.5 - 8/10.Spoiler: As for the ending, people are calling for a sequel - maybe that will happen, but I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't. Shaw was looking for the answers to life, answers she thought would be found on the setting for this film and didn't get, the metaphor for that is pretty obvious with real life, I'd rather they just left it on that, but I'm not against a sequel.EDIT: Realised the sequels been announced ha
Think I'll have a wank over these tomorrow.
The story delivered everything it needed to at this current point in the series. There might be some unanswered questions but given we have another film or two to go, they will probably be answered in those films. I just think people went in with massive expectations and came away feeling predictably disappointed. Besides the sometimes corny script (although not a consistent problem, only there occasionally) and some of the characters being pretty weak or generally pointless (having said that the relevant characters deliver), I would say the film generally hits all the right notes. I left the cinema thinking about the themes of the movie, I felt disturbed by some of the events, and I'm interested in where Scott will go from here.
I don't buy the sequels excuse. That's never a good excuse for a movie IMO. It's Ridley Scott, he never makes a movie so he can make a sequel. It takes him 35 years to do a sequel lol. I definitely agree with your last couple of sentences, about how the movie left me thinking (I thought about it for an entire week after I saw it), but I think a lot of it was by accident. It's not so much the philosophical questions, but plot points. For instance how did Idris Elba's character figure everything out, or how everyone on the ship outside of like the 5 main characters were just mindless drones. I just feel like there's a disconnect between the writing and directing. It doesn't help that Damon Lindelof wrote it. I don't know if you've seen Lost but if you have then you should understand lol
I'm hesitant to see the new spider-man. 1 because i don't like Emma Stone. and 2 because i kind of find it hard to buy Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker. He's like a model and Peter Parker is supposed to be Nerdy.I've only heard good things about moonrisre kingdom so im looking forward to it but i never really liked any of the Wes Anderson movies i have seen (The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, and Fantastic Mr. Fox. Did kind of like The Darjeeling Limited though) so I'm kind of iffy on if it it will really hit with me.
