Saw two movies this past weekend:

Easy A - When this first came out I thought, great, another teen high school movie. But I have to say, after watching it, I was extremely wrong. The obvious comparison for this is Mean Girls but I think it surpasses that. It's smarter, has a better message and pays really good homage to its predecessors from the 80s. Emma Stone is hilarious and she deserves to be the new "it" girl and the supporting cast for this is amazing. I legit laughed at least a dozen times in this, and that's saying something considering I'm 8 years removed from high school and in the end it obviously is a little over the top, but at the same time, down to earth. One of the best comedies of last year as far as I'm concerned - 9 out of 10.

Salt - Finally got around to watching this and I have to say I'm on the fence about it. It's a good concept, and I like how the "superspy" is a girl for once, but the whole thing is just kind of ridiculous and predictable at the same time. The whole first half I was like "this guy's the russian agent" or "that guy's the Russian agent". Nope. Well, it does take some twists and turns but in the end it's all muffled and kind of uninteresting. The only thing this has over other action films is that it's a girl not a guy, and it was supposed to be a guy anyway as the role was written for Tom Cruise originally. Either way, Angelina Jolie and Liev Schriver save this from being a total disaster but it's not something that you should watch anywhere other than TV or as a rental. Entertaining parts but forgettable. - 5.5 out of 10.

Going to see Thor this weekend so I should have a full length review up at BWP!

Think I'll have a wank over these tomorrow.

Decided to watch through the Scream series, as I've never seen them. Not really into slasher films either, so it was nice to see that they were more satirical more than anything. The one thing I took away from the series is that Neve Campbell is fantastic, really enjoyed her portrayal of Sidney in all four.

Loved the first and second, have them pretty much equal in terms of enjoyment. Perhaps with the first one just edging ahead. The third was okay, I've seen that it gets a lot of hate but it entertained me for a couple of hours and I don't really ask for anything else from a film. I thought the ending was pretty cool, the way it tied together all three films and as the finish to a trilogy, it was a fitting finish.

Loved four, Emma Roberts is amazing. I think it felt a lot more like the original than any of the sequels yet and that is definitely a good thing. Good plot, good ending. Not opposed to more films.

Gran Torino - Absolutely awesome, really good message balanced with some nice action scenes and script. Clint Eastwoods character in this is hilarious and its a really good stab at how society is nowadays. 9/10

I've seen Dead Man's Shoes it's actually pretty well known and famous...actually has quite a large cult following. It is the same director who did This is England.

Good length list of films, I hand my final piece of work ever at uni in today so want to catch up with films, so many I want to see.
I have heard of Dead Man's Shoes before, just by name, its probably known in our country but I doubt it is across the shore.

When you hand your dissertation in finish The Wire dammit!

Gran Torino is awesome. I can just imagine how that meeting went when he decided to make it.

Exec: So, Clint, what's your next movie about?
Clint: Well, I basically make racial slurs for 90 minutes before killing a bunch of gooks.
Exec: Where do I sign?

Thor

I had no expectations going in as I hadn't ever read the comics. I love Norse mythology though, so I presumed I'd enjoy it. However, I didn't just enjoy it, I absolutely loved it. I'd actually rank it with Iron Man 1 & Spiderman 2 as my favourite comic book movies ever. Everything was just perfect. Hemsworth is just filled to the brim with charisma, Portman was on form as ever, Hiddleston as Loki was perfect and although they could have just gone with something throwaway that they knew would make money in the lead up to the avengers; everything was structured perfectly.

Really good stuff.

I totally forgot this was already out across the pond. Going to see it opening night tomorrow and I'm incredibly excited. It's up around 90% on rotten tomatoes which is incredible for a comic book movie in general but also considering how much crap this film was taking a few months ago. Can't wait!

Tekken
The film has alot of issues, which i really don't want to go into. I would have liked it if Tekken related to the actual plot of the games like Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat.

3/10

It was just a slightly better than average teenage girl movie. It did have a charm to it but still. I think its more the fact you rated it that when it does not seem to reflect any of your previous tastes as well.

Thing is, it really isn't just another teen girl movie. That's why I rated it so highly. It was a very smart comedy that's relatable to anyone who's been a teenager in high school, not just girls. The comedy is witty and falls well outside the normal pitfalls of the teen dramedy and it does a really good job of not taking itself too seriously and caricaturizing its characters away from the standard typecasts of the normal teen movie. It's just like Mean Girls in the sense that you don't have to be a 14 year old girl to enjoy it, but even better because it's smarter and while i'm 5 years older from when I saw Mean Girls I found it funnier. As for my tastes, for comedy, I like things that are fun, silly, but also smart in their own way, so this definitely falls within my tastes. I think people need to look beyond the stigmas of certain types of movies and realize that there actually is substance beyond the generic genre of a film.

Oh, and I saw Thor:

Thor Movie Review | Better With Popcorn

8 out of 10.

Great comic book movie, incredible cast and the perfect director really. Visual effects are at their peak with this, and the story is simple but works great. It's not as fresh as say the first Iron Man but it definitely puts a lot of things together well while balancing the Avengers hype. The comedy is what especially got me in this. Great film, everyone should see it.

Breakfast at Tiffany's
Watched this on TV a couple days ago and surprised that I actually liked it considering its a film designed for females. Despite this, it was still pretty good and the relationship between the two lead characters seemed very realistic and genuine. Enjoyable and I can understand why Audrey Hepburn's character is iconic. Not something I would bang on about and will probably look back and forget most of it but it was worth the watch.7.5/10

The Bucket List
Caught this on TV as well, I actually assumed that it would be pretty bad as I swear it got slated when it was released. I was very wrong though, it was actually a really enjoyable film. Whilst Jack Nicholson is Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freemon is Morgan Freemon it was pretty funny and it was a nice story, even if it is simple it is a really uplifting film and I would quite happily watch this again. Definite recommendation if you want a straightforward comedy that will lift your mood. 8/10

Midnight Cowboy
Pretty disappointed with this film, I didn't really care about it. It picked up a bit towards the end but even then it just didn't really do anything for me. Jon Voight's character was really vain and had nothing likable about him, Dustin Hoffman's character was a bit better but I just didn't give a crap to be honest. Its the kind of thing other people would like but it did nothing for me. 6/10

The Red Shoes
Considering this film focuses on a ballerina and its from the 40's this film was actually really really good, I would honestly say its one of the best films I have seen and that is saying something. For a start the character Boris Lermontov is a great character, without him this film wouldn't be anywhere near as good as it is. Considering I have never heard of Anton Walbrook before, his performance of Boris Lermontov is definitely the anchor for this film great in depth character, a shame he didn't get an oscar nomination at the very least as it was well worthy of holding the statue. The cinematography from Jack Cardiff is awesome particular in the performance midway through the film which is a great piece of art, 20 minutes of sheer class with a great musical score to back it up. I liked the general message from this picture as well which was quite daring for its time given the war. Martin Scorsese has noted this as one of his favourite films and I can see why. 9.5/10

Shane
I've heard a lot about this film being one of the best westerns ever. I was hoping it wouldn't end up like High Noon and just be dated. However it was pretty good. The best part is Jack Palance, I've seen him in a couple things before and been impressed, considering how much of a joke Tango and Cash is, he made a good job of his role in that, and I know I've seen him in something else recently, I just can't think what it is. Anyway to his performance in this, he makes for a real cool bad guy with a great presence on screen which garnered an oscar nomination. The little kid in this film is hilarious because of how homo his character is for Shane which makes for some amusement, well for me it did anyway. At the same time though it made for an interesting character, he wasn't too annoying and at least he wasn't the usual twattish kid we'd get today who would back away from a fight, he actually liked the whole idea of seeing one which is how kids normally act in my opinion. He got an oscar nom as well. I guess my only complaint would be the pace of the film is pretty slow. I didn't mind it though but its not something you could sit down and watch the whole way through easily. Otherwise a good film and I appreciated the cinematography, great use of lighting. Jack Palance is definitely the highlight for this though. 7.5/10

Serenity
Second time I've watched this although I missed the start like I did the first time I watched it, which was kind of annoying. I really like this film to be honest its a shame it flopped as its a pretty good science fiction film. I found from this viewing that the film felt like Mass Effect, so I guess Mass Effect was inspired by it. Enjoy Nathan Fillion as the lead character, its a shame he isn't bigger then he is as the guy is pretty good as a lead actor in my opinion. He is built for Nate for Uncharted as well, literally stupid that he wasn't cast for that role. I would like to give Firefly a chance as well as I reckon I'd enjoy that TV series, been considering it for a while now. I can't think of many recent science fiction films that have a Star Wars vibe to them that have been any good, but this is probably the best you will get from this generation of film. Really good science fiction action film 8/10
