Title: London 2012
Post by: chappers on 29 July 2012, 03:29:48 PM
Seeing as the Olympics is on, just thought it would be worth chatting about it, interested to know what others thought of the opening ceremony, particularly a non-British opinion!

To be honest, I have absolutely no interest in it so haven't watched any of it.

I didn't watch the opening and i probably won't be watching any of it besides what they show on Sport center. the only thing i somewhat have interest in is Basketball. but the US will likely win every game so it's not THAT interesting.

All the other sports i care about aren't in the Olympics so i don't really have much interest.
American Football
Baseball
Nascar (Somewhat)
Tennis (Somewhat)

To me it seems like stuff like Tennis and Golf would be in the Olympics. i can understand baseball not being in it beings the MLB season is currently going on and is always in the summer. and I can understand football due to all the injuries and because it's such a rough game but tsuff like Tennis and Golf which has so many international stars seem perfect for them to me.

I don't much about Soccer but i know you brits love it. Do you guys want to see it in the Olympics? or would it not work due to some sort of on going season? or hell is it actually in the Olympics and i am just not aware.

Tennis and Football (soccer) are both in the Olympics, and they are introducing Golf for the next Olympics. I was pretty annoyed as I applied to get tickets for the tennis, didn't get them, watched some matches earlier and half the seats were empty; fucking ridiculous.  I am pretty surprised that everyone on here missed the opening ceremony, thought most would tune in whether they like the Olympics or not :S. Yeah I might check out the basketball, I've got a vague understanding of it and used to watch it a bit at the turn of the millennium, enjoy its fast pace although I don't understand some of the rules but its enjoyable to watch.

What's to understand about basketball? You put the ball in the basket. And you have to be an inner city 6'5" black kid to play it.

I watched most of the opening ceremony. Quite frankly, compared to what China did and to a lesser extent Canada in 2010 it wasn't amazing. Just seemed like Danny Boyle was trying to make a big joke of everything. The Mr. Bean bit was pretty funny though.

The travesty so far has been Frank Turner playing the opening of the entire Olympics and not getting any US airtime. Seriously, fuck NBC.

Looking at the medal count it looks like China is making everyone their bitch. at least when it comes to Gold. US is only 2 total medals behind but Chine is dominating is gold.

Well there are over a billion Chinese people so statistically speaking China are always going to win more medals.

China also appear to train the hardest, their training hours, conditions and programmes for their child athletes verges on child abuse.

Ignoring the fact that china is probably the wealthiest country and has the most people in the country, you can't forget they hosted the last olympics; they were pretty much doing what team gb have done and trying to boost the people competing into medal winners. They'll be around for a while though, but next week USA will probably overtake in the medals table, I would assume they're better then china on the track and field events, who only have that hurdler.

Been a good olympics though, I don't think its quite as good as Sydney just yet, but I would say its doing as good a job as Beijing, did you see the badminton match earlier btw?

I saw that the womens doubles were all cheating so they wouldn't have to play Denmark lol. The Canadian team had lost so they were sleeping in and got the call that they were playing that night.

Any of you folks in the UK going to any of the events or anything? I have always wanted to see the Olympics.

I went the other day, it was a really great experience. Went and watched the Trampoline. I went in knowing it wouldn't be as spectacular as the other gymnastics events, but I was glad to be a part of the experience. Getting tickets was such a fucking pain that I was just on a high getting one, in fact, if I didn't get that ticket I doubt I would have got another chance to go to the Olympics, particularly for such a technical event. I've checked the website regularly and its just tickets for Football, Hockey or Basketball (no offence to those sports, but I really wanted to go to a sport which I wouldn't be able to view without the Olympics being here).

Watching it was pretty different to wrestling though, I mean it was dead silent through the whole arena when they were competing, just for the competitors to focus on their routines. Aside from the applause at the end, it was fairly quiet, but it was justified for what they were doing. It might have been different though if there was a British competitor performing and someone for the crowd to route for and really get into it, plus I only had one ticket by myself so that might have taken me out a bit. That's my only complaint though, I didn't feel the atmosphere was quite there in comparison to most of the other events this Olympics, which has been quite deafening from what I've seen.

Watching and reflecting on it, I was impressed with the amount of work and dedication the athletes put in. For example, with the Trampoline, they have three routines, two before the final, and one routine in the final where they get to show off what they could do. Four years of work could go any time if they faulter, the margin of error is so small; you have to respect them for putting in their life's work and sticking with it for an event every four years. However, its not just that, the fact that they are jumping the height of two double deckers stacked on top of each other, landing in a two by one metre box and doing all these crazy flips in such a rigid straight posture, its pretty ridiculous. I had to respect them, even just jumping up and landing in the box is hard enough.

If you have the chance to go I would recommend it. I think if I go again (thinking of going to Rio in four years to be honest), if I had more variety with events I could watch, I would have gone for something which would have been a crowd pleaser as well as being exciting to watch (but I think most Olympic sports have an adrenaline if you really get into it, unless its horse riding T_T). Glad I watched it though, it will be a long time if it ever comes back to England and I can now say that I went to an olympics event, saw all the different medals and was entertained whilst watching it.

How come noone is talking about Melissa Tancredi from Canada stomping on Carly Lloyd's head in the box? Huge missed call there should have been a red card. In the end it evened out.

Apparently Wambach had been counting to the ref all game about how long the keeper had been holding the ball and was complaining all game... Who knows, it was an odd call. USA vs Japan will be a tight contest....

Chappers, that is cool. I'd love to go an see track, swimming, or basketball. But I would take tickets to anything to experience it for sure.
